Going from a large non-profit organization to a smaller one is a complete culture shift for a prospect researcher. I had recently left my position at a secondary education institution to work at the Calgary Zoo. It was a switch from a mature development team with three prospect researchers to a growing seven-member team and one-person research shop.

"There can be no mistake, the quintessence of successful fund-raising is the careful and sometimes imaginative matching of askers to givers." In that one sentence Jerold Panas firmly combines two aspects of fund-raising that are often isolated from one another: those who do the research, and those who use the research.

Members of APRA Canada were invited to participate in APRA Canada’s fourth membership survey from November 30 through December 16th 2011. 78 members or 39% of invited members responded. Thank you very much to everyone who completed the survey. The information tabulated from your responses will help the board of APRA Canada as we plan new activities for our members and for prospect researchers across Canada.

It is April, and for everyone across Canada that means tax filing time. And it is the same for APRA Canada. I’m currently preparing our tax return and should have that finished by the end of the week. It’s amazing how much we collect, and spend, on taxes every year!

On March 14, APRA Canada hosted its very first twitter talk on social media and prospect research. It was a lively discussion with 425 tweets generated 170,774 impressions, reaching an audience of 8,090 followers. Researchers from across Canada and the US joined in sharing information, asking questions and generating a lively dialogue 140 characters at a time. For those who are still new to social media there will be a workshop presentation at the conference covering Twitter and LinkedIn.

Melody Song presents a new perspective on how prospect researchers can become part of the events team and, in particular, on how to use events for prospecting. The book Mega Gifts: Who gives them, who gets them by Jerold Panas (2005) is reviewed and recommended from a prospect researcher’s perspective.
