Another Success! APRA Canada Conference 2012: Leading Discovery

After a two-year journey of conference planning and preparation, everything came to life during October 10-12 when over 150 delegates and speakers attended APRA-C’s Leading Discovery conference in Toronto. Early results from the post-conference survey show that an overwhelming majority of attendees would recommend the APRA-C conference to colleagues given the quality of programming and networking opportunities.

Mentorship Update

I am happy to report that there has been a flurry of activity within the Mentorship Program as of late!  Over the past year I have matched twenty-three pairs, seven of those within the last two months.

The Mentorship Program is available to APRA Canada members with the goal of helping new researchers get answers to their questions about research and fundraising by providing a positive relationship with a colleague who will serve as a one-on-one mentor and provide professional guidance. Mentors often learn a few tips and tricks from their mentees as well!

As the Communications portfolio says goodbye to Shelly and Sharina, there is now an opportunity for new volunteers to become editors of The Scoop.

APRA International Conference Review by Melody Song

It’s a steaming August evening in Minneapolis.  I deposited my rented bike into the NiceRide bike sharing system at the intersection of Franklin & Hennepin, two major thoroughfares that run through the trendy neighborhood of Uptown Minneapolis.  I happily stumbled upon NiceRide which allowed me to escape the empty shell of downtown and explored this livelier part of the city.  I read somewhere that “discovering a favourite street in any city is always the tipping point from being just a visitor to feeling at home”.

Supporting Our Fundraisers: Prospect Management at University of Calgary by Kat Carson

Fundraisers should do just that: fundraise. Those of us working in advancement understand the importance of ensuring fundraisers are able spend their time in the community, building relationships and securing gifts. As researchers and prospect managers, not only can we help prepare our fundraisers for prospect visits, we can also provide the back-end support and thus, the necessary time to fully engage potential donors, to get out the door and get the gift.

Bursting the Internet Filter Bubble

Being the ever so “benevolent” company, Google wants to help make things easier for you when you use their search engine.  So, in 2009, Google introduced personalized search, a concept in which your search results are customized for you based on various algorithms that Google uses to compose a profile of who you are.  In essence, gone are the days where everyone receives the same results in the same order when they search on common keywords.  Your results are now unique to you.
