Issue 35 Fall 2011

Welcome to the Fall 2011 issue of The Scoop!

Looking forward to the next APRA Canada Conference and reflecting on the articles in this issue's The Scoop, makes it clear how diverse and wonderful the prospect research profession is. Whether it is your personal calling, a first step into a new career in the non-profit world, or a stepping stone to other parts of the fundraising profession, being a prospect researcher is a unique and challenging position. The same can be said of leadership - whether you consider yourself a natural leader or not (in personal or professional life), being a leader always has unique challenges.

In an engaging article, Drew Collier of UBC talks about the unique excitements and challenges of leadership. His article, "Thoughts on Leadership in Advancement", will make you think carefully about how you can be a better leader and how you can help your own leaders (those you report to) succeed.

Becoming a leader in your title often means leaving the prospect research fold, and co-editor Shelly speaks to Julia Sutherland about what it was like when she was in a leadership position in research and what the transition to a fundraising position has entailed. If you've ever wondered about making the leap - this is a must read.

Thank you to our generous contributors and interviewee for taking the time to help us provide an insightful and informative issue.

We are looking for new contributors and ideas for the next issue. I have heard from members that they feel unqualified to write authoritatively on topics. If this describes you, why not write a book or educational session review, or do an interview of someone you admire in the profession. Or talk about your experience testing something new (or new to you). We have members at all stages, from beginners to advanced professionals and everyone has something of interest they can share.

We welcome any comments, questions or critiques about The Scoop.

Happy reading!

Thanks,

Shelly Steenhorst-Baker and Sharina Janif
