Issue 36 February 2012

Welcome to The Scoop and our new online look @ our new website!

Hello fellow prospect researchers,

We hope all of you find our new website easier to navigate, and reading issues of The Scoop much more enjoyable!  Many thanks to Julie Linkletter for spearheading this endeavour and making it easier to upload documents and peruse the site.

In this issue, we discuss Best Practices and the Privacy Law as it pertains to Research.  Susan Loh of the University of Calgary examined US and Canadian non-profit research shops and explains her findings and those of her colleagues.  And, Shelly Steenhorst-Baker has written an article on torts and privacy laws as it applies to the collection and viewing of information.  These are both very interesting articles which affect our day-to-day research in non-profit shops across Canada.  Thank you both for your contributions.

We don’t get the chance to hear from our APRA board members often enough so here are updates from our President, Val Moore of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation; Liz Rejman of London Health Sciences Foundation; and Julie Linkletter of UBC.

Spring and summer will be here in no time, and gone even faster!  Fall will be upon us in just a few months along with the much-anticipated APRA-Canada Conference in Toronto in mid-October 2012.  This year’s co-chairs Preeti Gill of UBC and Selene Hur of YMCA Toronto have been working long hours organizing the event.  Now, they are in the process of finding presenters for the conference.  If you are interested, we encourage you to contact them; please see the article for more details.

Lastly, just for some fun, we have a photo from the 2011 Holiday Event for the Calgary-area researchers kindly submitted by new APRA-C board member Erin Bartok.  It’s always nice to put faces to the names and voices of our colleagues, so photos are a welcome addition to The Scoop.

We hope you find this issue informative and interesting.  If you have any suggestions for future issues, please feel free to communicate those to us.

Happy reading!
