Issue 43 March 2014

Astronomer Carl Sagan, in his 1980 book Cosmos, said “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” For this issue of The Scoop – Research & Prospect Management 101: Building a Strong Foundation – we’re going all the way back. Maybe not to the beginning of time, but at least back to basics for Prospect Research and Prospect Management. For those new to the fields (welcome, new APRA Canada members!) or who are coming to us from other areas within Advancement or even those making a change from other careers, we hope that this issue provides answers to your basic questions, and maybe even helps you to take things to the next step.

Survey results are in from APRA-C Membership Survey and we’ll update you on the latest edition of APRA Twitter Talks.

Scoop co-editor and the University of Calgary's Manager of Prospect Research Susan Loh presents a primer on research profiles while fellow UofC colleague Jana Wilde walks us through the basics of using SEDI and SEDAR in your research. Martha Tuff from the IWK Foundation shares her experiences working in a team environment, and rounding out research, SFU’s Andrew Boden offers up some absurd research requests – and lets you know just how to deal with them.

From the Ivey Business School, Sarah McCarthy and Emily Joldersma provide us with The Fundamentals of Establishing a Successful Prospect Management System, and Shelly Steenhorst-Baker and I will help you find out how your PM shop can “level up.”

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. In the meantime, remember: the sky’s the limit!
