Networking for Quiet Changemakers

Do you recharge by spending your downtime alone? Do you enjoy discussing topics of interest as opposed to small talk? Do you prefer socializing in small groups with people you already know? Then you may be an introvert, or in Trina Isakson’s terms, a quiet changemaker.

I recently attended a webinar hosted by Trina and Charity Village that explored the role of introverts in the nonprofit sector. Trina had some great tips for those of us who identify as quiet changemakers. With the APRA International and APRA-Canada Conferences on the horizon, I wanted to share her thoughts on networking for introverts:

How to Make the Most of Networking Events:

·         Go with a goal in mind. This will help you focus your energy on interactions and conversations that move you toward your goal.

·         Focus your energy on developing deep, strategic connections.

·         Choose events that repeat (monthly events or annual conferences) over one-off events. You’ll get to know other regular attendees, will feel more comfortable and may be able to bypass some of the small talk.

·         For work events, volunteer to do something that doesn’t require you to stand around and make small talk (volunteer to take photos, or interview people for an article or blog post).

·         For events outside work hours, take time off in lieu (if possible) to balance your energy.
